Matt Stone and Trey Parker have made fun of Mormons on South Park, they’ve ridiculed the religious group on Broadway, and now they plan on taking their fascination with the Mormon world to the big screen. Stone and Parker confirmed to Entertainment Weekly today that their smash Broadway hit, The Book of Mormon , will become a movie eventually.
Parker told EW :
“Hopefully it will have a big run and a big tour and then we can do the movie in several years.”
All the pieces are already in place for The Book of Mormon movie, and now Stone and Parker are just waiting for the right time. No plans are set yet, but Parker will probably direct the movie while Scott Rudin, who worked with the comedy duo on S outh Park: Bigger Longer Uncut , and Team America: World Police and was instrumental in getting The Book of Mormon off the ground, will likely produce.
Stone said:
“We want to do it some day. The great thing is, a lot of Broadway teams would have to go team up with a Hollywood producer and bring on a Hollywood director, but Trey’s a director and Scott’s a great producer. We’ve all made movies. So it’s kind of cool, it can stay in the same family.”
But it could be a year or two until The Book of Mormon hits the silver screen. Matt Stone and Trey Parker are pretty busy with their hit musical and the second half of the current season of South Park.
The Chicago Tribune reports that The Book of Mormon is pretty much sold out until 2012 and that tickets routinely sell for $500 or more. The Book of Mormon also won 9 Tony awards this year, including best musical. If the South Park duo do bring their satirical show to the silver screen, are we talking about an Oscar contender?
