A viral video showing a white couple confronting a Black hairstylist in the lobby of a Washington, D.C., apartment building has sparked widespread outrage on social media and renewed debate on racism and white privilege.
The footage, posted to TikTok and Instagram on August 11 by user @Niniluvs.yu, shows the stylist waiting calmly in the lobby for a client while the elderly couple stands nearby. They repeatedly questioned her presence and demanded to know why she was in the building.
The video shows the stylist remaining composed throughout the interrogation and informing the couple that she was permitted to be on the premises.
“I need you to step away from me if that’s okay. I have permission to be here. It’s okay. You guys are okay. You guys are okay. I promise,” she tells the couple.
Despite her explanations, the pair continued to press her regarding her reason for being inside the private residential area. “I’m not saying you’re hurting us,” the elderly woman replies. “We could get fined for letting somebody in the building who doesn’t have permission or live here.”
“It’s okay. I promise. You guys are fine. I have a client. He’s calling his way down. I have a client. He’s calling his way down,” Nini explained.
She then tried to cut the tension by engaging in casual chat with the couple.
“How are you guys, though? You guys doing good? That’s good. That’s good. Unfortunately, you guys know I have to record for my safety. You guys will see the person I’m here with when they come down.”
Nini then turns to her camera, talking to the viewers.

“Just trying to work, y’all. You got people worried about me instead of going on about their business.”
The elderly man picks up on Nini’s words and tells her that she is not supposed to be inside the premises. He claims that she entered the building after they buzzed themselves in; they are going to get fined a hundred dollars.
“Who made you guys Captain?” Nini asks them sarcastically. She then again looks at her camera and says, “It’s okay, you guys. We’re all just here chatting. It’s gonna be a great day; I got work. And then as soon as work is over, I got school. And this is what I got to do in the morning. But it’s not, like, the worst. It’s not the worst. It could be worse.”
The man interrupts her and asks when the client will come. “I’m not obligated to answer any of your questions,” she responds.
Her client finally comes downstairs. Nini informs him of the situation. “Oh my God, look who’s here for me. Look at them two. They literally sat here just to watch me.”
The elderly woman gets up from her seat and informs the young man that no one is supposed to enter the building unless an occupant rings them in. The client apologizes to the couple.
The clip quickly circulated across online platforms. It has since drawn intense scrutiny and gotten people talking about the treatment of Black individuals in residential spaces.
“White privilege is being able to wait in an apartment lobby without being harassed,” one comment under the original video on Instagram read.
One user wrote, “So why is there a waiting area??? For people to wait, right?? This is just insane!!!”
Another user pointed out the couple’s absurd excuse, “Are we missing this point? She was supposed to be there. The fine is for letting people who are not supposed to be there or don’t have permission. She came in, sat in the waiting area, and then was met by the client. I saw this uploaded somewhere else, and everyone was mad the Black woman spoke to the people. We live in a weird world.”
“Yikes—so every delivery and package needs a tenant to meet them at the door, and they wait outside? Nope. They need a better story. Weak,” read a separate comment.
However, some commentators sided with the elderly couple.
One user wrote, “Wait. So, you followed them inside? If you did, you’re in the wrong. This has nothing to do with your skin color. If you waited for your guy to come down, there would be no issue.”
“In fairness, I hate when people jump through the door after I’ve buzzed in… You should have just called your client to buzz you in. Easy,” said another IG user.
