The Angry Birds are heading to outer space. Rovio, who created the groundbreaking game, is set to launch a new version of the game set in the final frontier. Angry Birds Space will hit smart phones and tablets on March 22nd.

Rovio writes in a blog post:

“Angry Birds Space is a completely new game with innovative new gameplay, but with some of the familiar Angry Birds elements that fans already know and love — plus some surprises!”

Rovio said that the new game will launch simultaneously in “mobile gaming, animation, retail, and publishing.” It isn’t clear exactly what that means, but I’m guessing that we’ll see some Angry Games Space merchandise hitting shelves in March as well.

Details about the new game are scarce but Rovio did release a 20-second teaser trailer on its Facebook page. The trailer doesn’t show any game action but does show an Angry Bird with some pretty evil eyes.

Here’s the trailer for Angry Birds Space.

Do you still play Angry Birds? The paid version of Angry Birds is the top selling app in the iTunes app store and the free version has been downloaded more than 11 million times. Do you think Angry Birds Space will be as popular as the original?
