Sony Pictures announced yesterday that famed screenwriter Aaron Sorkin will indeed, as rumored , be scripting an upcoming Steve Jobs biopic.

Sorkin is well known for his take on tech entrepreneur and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in the film the Social Network as well as for his work on The West Wing and A Few Good Men.

He had stated last year that he was “strongly considering” writing the film.

Sony Pictures Co-Chairman Amy Pascal said that Steve Jobs’ story is “unique” because “he was one of the most revolutionary and influential men not just of our time but of all time” and, as such, “there is no writer working in Hollywood today who is more capable of capturing such an extraordinary life for the screen than Aaron Sorkin; in his hands, we’re confident that the film will be everything that Jobs himself was: captivating, entertaining, and polarizing.”

Sorkin’s project will be based on the authorized, and best selling, biography of Jobs written by Walter Isaacson published just after Jobs’ death of cancer last year and will compete directly with an small independent biography of Jobs starring Ashton Kutcher .

According to MacRumors, “Casting for the film has yet to be determined, but rumors have suggested that George Clooney and Noah Wyle may be in the running for the role of Jobs. Wyle portrayed Jobs in the 1999 made-for-TV film The Pirates of Silicon Valley , which focused on the early days of Jobs and Bill Gates.”

While Pirates of Silicon Valley is currently considered a cult classic, Sorkin will have a good chance of topping the film due to his access to Isaacson, Jobs’ official biographer.
