‘Arrested Development’ Failed To Attract New Netflix Subscribers

Arrested Development season 4 was a big hit among die hard fans, but ultimately it failed to drastically increase Netflix subscriber numbers.

According to the company’s newest financial report, Netflix added 2 million domestic subscribers through the final quarter of 2012 and the first quarter of 2013. However, the streaming movie and TV show provider only signed up 630,000 subscribers in the most recent quarter.

While the company now counts 28.62 million paying domestic subscribers among its user base, it reported lower than expected domestic and international numbers. According to Netflix, the company added 610,000 international members during the same 2012 to 2013 time period.

On the international side, 7.1 million customers now use Netflix after the company signed up 1.81 million new subscribers in Q4 2012 and 1.02 million in Q1 2013.

Arrested Development didn’t exactly have the best quarter to gauge its numbers. Traditionally Q2 is the worst subscriber sign-up time for Netflix. Last year, the company added just 530,000 domestic and 560,000 international subscribers in Q2 2012.

In the financial statement, CEO Reed Hastings said Arrested Development generated “a small but noticeable bump in membership when we released it” and that “other great shows don’t have that noticeable effect in their first season because they are less established.”

With more new shows arriving to critical acclaim and the company’s first Emmy nominations, it could just be that anyone who wants Netflix type service has already signed up and is utilizing the platforms new shows.

Netflix is forecasting 1.09 million additional domestic streaming subscribers and 90,000 international subscribers for the current quarter.

The video streaming platform still has a long way to go before it can compete with CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, and even cable TV stations, but it seems to be headed on the right path.

No word yet if the low subscriber numbers will put Arrested Development season 5 in jeopardy.

Did you sign up for Netflix thanks to Arrested Development, or did you simply tune in because you were already a subscriber and love the show?
