Kitten Is Saved By A Stiff Vodka Drip, After Being Doused In Antifreeze By Pranksters

A helpless kitten was saved from certain death by a rather strange medical procedure. Medical personnel who treated the kitten administered a rather stiff Intravenous (IV) drip, comprised almost entirely of pure vodka.

Missey, a moggy (non-pedigree) cat was left desperately struggling to survive after she was attacked by mindless thugs, who doused her in antifreeze outside her home in Middlesborough, North Yorkshire. Realizing the heinous act, owners of Missey immediately rushed her to the nearby veterinarian. Upon examination of the poor kitten’s condition, the vets came up with a novel and rather unorthodox treatment. They suggested that vodka would help to break down the poison. The medical staff advised Missey be administered an IV drip of vodka as it is supposed to be the lightest and clearest of all alcohols.

Desperate to save the poor kitten’s life, the owners agreed and over the span of two days, the helpless kitten was administered about half a liter of 37.9 percent vodka through her veins, reported The Mirror. Despite ending up “blind drunk,” the bizarre treatment seems to have miraculously worked and Missey is on her way to recovery. Doctors have confirmed that Missey still has at least seven to eight of her nine lives left.

Speaking about the horrible and nightmarish experience, the kitten’s owner, Sara Stephenson, said she had no idea that alcohol could be used to treat animals. Explaining Missey’s condition post the “vodka drip,” Sara said.

“She was trying to get up, but toppled over. Her eyes were out of focus and when we took her home in a carry basket, her mouth has pressed up against the wire so it looked as though she had her teeth bared. At one point she was lying down trying to swipe at a pen and she just kept missing it, she was that out of it. It was totally mad.”

However, the vet, Andrew Miller, who treated Missey at the White Cross vets in North Yorkshire, said vodka was commonly used to treat animals that had swallowed anti-freeze, reported The Daily Mail. Speaking about the rather unusual, but clearly common form of treatment, he said,

“Anti-freeze is extremely toxic to animal’s kidneys. We specifically use vodka because the ethanol in it neutralizes the substance in the poison. Anti-freeze is life-threatening. Sadly, not all animals we have seen who have swallowed the substance make it, but if seen quickly and if they are given the vodka to react to the anti-freeze, they have a good chance of surviving.”

They say alcohol isn’t the solution, but the vets at the White Cross proved it wrong. Hopefully, Missey doesn’t develop a taste for the Russian drink.
