WWE Rumors: WWE Teases First-Time Entrant Winning ‘Royal Rumble’ 2016 — Someone From NXT
From the archive: published Jan 4, 2016, 10 years ago. Details may have changed since.
It’s been a few years since it last happened, but with the unpredictability of the Royal Rumble , anyone can win it. That means a first-time entrant could end up winning the whole thing, and WWE is actually teasing that it may happen. Who knows? Someone with a name like Kevin Owens, Braun Strowman, or Neville may go on to main event WrestleMania 32 .
As of Monday morning, only one person has officially announced they will be in the Royal Rumble 30-person over-the-top match, and that’s Big Show. The New Day obviously have plans of joining and even have a “new rule ” that may help them out.
Some believe that there will be a big name winning the rumble match and going to main event WrestleMania. The names of Brock Lesnar and even Triple H have been thrown around, but this is a match that can always, and surely has in the past, surprise everyone.
It’s not totally out of the question for a first-timer to win the Rumble match, and the last time it did take place was in 2011. As recapped by Wikipedia, Alberto Del made his debut in the match at number 38 and eliminated Santino Marella last to win it.
WWE.com released a list of “10 Things We Want To See In 2016,” and one of them happens to be a superstar winning the Rumble match in their rumble debut.
“It’s time for a Superstar to channel his inner Ric Flair, Brock Lesnar or Alberto Del Rio and win the Rumble Match in his first appearance in the bout. The roster boasts plenty of interesting candidates, like Kevin Owens, Neville, Braun Strowman and myriad options from NXT. Someone needs to rise to the occasion.”
It’s interesting that WWE chose those three specific names because only one of them really stands out. Neville main eventing WrestleMania isn’t out of the question, but it just really isn’t his time yet. Look for bigger things from him in the future, but the high-flyer is not yet there.
Braun Strowman is a bit too much of a side character right now, and he’s also a bit too green (inexperienced) in the ring. Yes, Bray Wyatt is promising big things from The Wyatt Family at the Royal Rumble, but it won’t be Strowman winning the whole big match.
The other name on the list is the one that stands out the most – Kevin Owens.
During his short amount of time on the main roster of WWE, Owens has feuded with and cleanly defeated John Cena. He won the Intercontinental Championship and held onto it for quite some time. He’s also been involved in some of the bigger feuds over the past few months.
Now, he’s being focused on by the writers of WWE.com about possibly winning the Royal Rumble in his match debut. First, he has to actually enter the match, but it’s fully expected that he will throw his name in before too long.
Many fans wonder if Roman Reigns will be going into WrestleMania 32 as the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. If he does, then that will bring about a big question for WWE: Will a main event title match of Roman Reigns vs. Kevin Owens sell?
That’s what truly will need to be determined before wondering if an NXT or new talent can win the rumble match in their debut.
The Royal Rumble is only three weeks away now, and only one person is officially in it. More names are coming soon, but as WWE is wondering, will it be possible for a superstar such as Kevin Owen to make his Rumble match debut and win the whole thing? It’s one-for-one and all-against-all, so anything is capable of happening.
