Last week a group of hackers made their way into the systems of the Washington Post, stealing 1.2 million email addresses, most from site visitors who entered their personal information into the company’s “Jobs” section.
At this time no hacker entity has claimed responsibility for the hack and the paper believes those individuals were just looking to send spam, noting on the their own FAQs page that job seekers:
“Should be aware that you may receive some unsolicited email as a result of this incident.”
Large newspapers often ask their readers to give up a tiny bit of information in order to be able to post comments and read special sections of their paper with Christian Science Monitor writer Matthew Shaer noting:
“Readers like to trust that that personal information will be kept safe, not left exposed to marauding groups of hackers, whomever those marauding groups of hackers may be.”
I’ll stick with my fake email address for registration purposes for the time being.
