The United States has officially had the hottest spring in recorded history according to Federal records which tallied this years weather against former seasons.
The hot weather in the lower 48 states climbed high enough in March, April and May to beat the old record by a full 2 degrees with a three month average of 57.1 degrees. That average is a full 5 degrees above average.
Meteorologist consider those three months to be “Spring” and they say it is the highest temps they have seen “above average” since weather recording began.
When examining just the month of May the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration revealed on Thursday that it was the second warmest May in recorded history (recording began in 1895). The only hotter month of May came in 1934 when we saw temperatures average out at 64.3 degrees across the lower 48.
Meteorologist’s also found that the first five months of 2012 were the warmest in U.S. weather history.
In considering the June 2011 – June 2012 period the U.S. also had its hottest 12 month period on record.
While global warming supporters are quick to point towards global warming as the main culprit, meteorologists blame the hot temperatures on a persistent weather pattern that has pushed warm air into areas where it typically arrives at a later time.
With our hottest months still ahead of us it is likely more records could be broken.
