Did Mitt Romney retire from Bain Capitol in 1999 or 2002? President Obama has attacked his GOP opponent over his claim that he left the company in 1999 despite evidence that showed he remained with Bain until 2002. Romney’s adviser Ed Gillespie said on Sunday that Romney “retired retroactively” in 2002 and even though he was listed as part of the company, in reality, or fantasy, he left Bain in 1999.

Gillespie said:

“There may have been a thought at the time that [Romney’s Bain work] could be part-time. It was not part-time. The Olympics was in a shambles… He took a leave of absence and in fact, ended up not going back at all and retired retroactively to February 1999 as a result.”

Romney has been under fire for the last week after reports surfaced saying that he was listed as the CEO of Bain long after he originally claimed. Romney has tried to distance himself from the company, at least during the period after 1999, when the company invested in several companies that were sending jobs overseas.

But despite the fact that Romney was listed as the CEO, according to Gillespie, he retroactively retired in 2002.
