Tim Tebow Custom “Jesus” Jersey Causing a Stir

As the holiday shopping season quickly approaches, a customized Tim Tebow jersey being worn by a handful of Denver Broncos fans is creating quite a stir in the sports world.

Rather than have the rookie quarterback’s name on the back of the jersey, these “faithful” fans have chosen to place the name of the messiah – Jesus Christ – above Tebow’s No. 15.

The “Jesus Jersey,” as it’s come to be known, has drawn harsh criticism from a variety of sources.

“Weed against Speed,” a pseudonym for a blogger from the Sportress of Blogitude website, sarcastically writes that it’s a “total surprise” that a Tebow fan would create a custom jersey like that.

“And if you ask me, maybe a bit sacrilegious,” the blogger writes. “But hey, I’m no theologian, so what does my opinion matter?”

Traci Yown, another critic of the Jesus jersey, says the new custom apparel is blasphemous.

“Sports is one thing, and Jesus is another thing,” Yown told CNN while Christmas shopping for her child. “I like to have their names, their last names on the jerseys. I’m a Christian, but I mean I wouldn’t want people going around having Jesus on the back of their jerseys.”

Not everyone, however, thinks the custom jersey is a mockery of God.

Jonathan Ramos, one commenter on a recent Christian Post article discussing the controversy, pointed out:

“You know, actually I don’t see it as sacrilegious, because when we are saved, it is Jesus Christ who lives in us, who moves us, and guides us. He is who the Father sees when He looks down upon us. And Jesus Christ is the reason that Tebow plays in the NFL. And He should be glorified , so I don’t find it sacrilegious, we should all wear our “Jesus Jersey”!”

What are your thoughts on the Tim Tebow “Jesus Jersey”? Sacrilegious or perfectly fine?
