While it’s probably true that most mothers are just happy to be remembered on Mother’s Day , it’s also true that some mothers have come forward to say that they have gotten some really bad gifts on their special day. The two ideas aren’t mutually exclusive – Mom can be glad you remembered her, but can be simultaneously bummed with her gift. It’s probably hard to go wrong with breakfast, lunch, or dinner out (as long as you don’t stick mom with the bill) and flowers or some type of jewelry are often popular hits. If you’re a little more adventurous, try something unique that shows you really know your mom – maybe classes to that yoga place she’s wanted to try, a day at the spa, or supplies for any hobby she may have, such as painting, knitting, or running.
Gifts that show you really know your mom and went out of your way will be the biggest hit, but whatever you do, there are some gifts she’s sure to not appreciate. Of course, there’s rare exceptions to every rule, but most moms aren’t going to be thrilled by things from the hardware store or a new spigot for their garden hose. According to the Social Scene , a few mothers opened up and shared their worst mother’s day gifts ever.
“A toilet-bowl brush set and cleaning supplies.”
“My husband decided to go out of state on Mother’s Day weekend, and it wasn’t just for business. I was seven months pregnant with our second child.”
“A set of pots.”
“I asked my husband what we should do for my first Mother’s Day. He looked a bit perplexed and said, ‘Well, you’re not my mother.’”
“A screen door.”
“My husband gave me a card emblazoned with heart-shaped egg yolks on top of shattered shells that read, ‘Thanks for donating your eggs.’”
While some of these are humorous, and some might even be just what another mom would like, the problem appears to be that the giver of the gifts did not consider what the receiver of the gift might like – for some, it’s simply time alone!
Another theme on Mother’s Day that doesn’t make the grade is making Mom work, such as painting your room or asking her to fix her own Mother’s Day dinner and invite all the kids over. However, other mothers are sure to delight in those things. A well-picked card is important too, so that Mom doesn’t feel that she was suddenly remembered at the last second and got the last card on the shelf.
