Teacher Hangs Black Doll With Cord Around Neck, Then Gives Students Bizarre Explanation

A teacher in Florida was fired after a video of her hanging a black doll, wrapping a cord around its neck, went viral.

A Florida teacher was fired from Barrington Middle School in Lithia over a viral video showing her hanging a black doll with a cord. The charger cord was wrapped around the doll’s neck, and the doll was hanging from the classroom TV. The teacher is identified as Karen Savage, who was secretly recorded by students. Nina Williams, a parent of a 14-year-old student, wrote on Instagram, condemning the teacher: “Look at the photo. Look at the video. When the children called out this blatant, disgusting act of hate and asked why she hung that doll by its neck, she laughed it off. Her excuse to our kids was that she did it ‘to get their attention.'” According to WSTP, the teacher took the doll from a classmate who wasn't paying attention. She then wrapped a cord around the doll’s neck. At first, students reacted nervously, but soon the tone changed. Williams's son Noah called the incident disturbing and hopes she's never allowed to teach again. Williams added that it was a multicultural classroom, and everyone in the classroom must have been offended and disturbed by her actions. She clarified, “This is NOT a classroom management tool. This is straight-up hate and trauma being weaponized in front of our children in a place where they are supposed to be safe.” Williams stated that the incident has a deeper meaning and brought back dark memories. She said, “We don’t want to remember lynchings and Jim Crow and separation and division, and we try to get away from all of those things. Our children are supposed to be able to go to school and not have to worry about being reminded of our past, of things that we had to experience.” She later wrote on Facebook that her son won’t be going back to the school until she feels comfortable and the situation is addressed. Meanwhile, the teacher told the students that it was just a joke while referencing lynching and racist history. The incident was reported to the Florida Department of Education’s Office of Professional Practice Services. This may also impact her teaching certificate. She began working at the school in 2018. The school superintendent condemned Savage’s actions and released a statement, “The content of this display is unacceptable and does not reflect the values of our school community, or me as your superintendent, and will not be tolerated.” He added that the school is committed to providing supportive learning environments where students feel respected and safe. The video went viral, and netizens jumped into the comment section. Many condemned the teacher’s actions as grotesque and said children should not have been exposed to it. One X user asked, "Ok ok ok but why? Like what’s the best explanation for even doing this? No matter the color of the baby doll, why? I really need an explanation." Another confused viewer commented, “At this point, I can't tell if it's meant to show awareness as a reminder, or if it's meant to be insulting.” One more posted, "I know a lot of people don’t want phones in schools, but who the kids have been believed without the video?"
