If you feel like Target has a better array of mass-market options but shuffle into Walmart for presumed lower prices, you can rest easy on your next Target trip.

A recent comparison of the two mega-retailers indicates that average prices at Target come in as slightly lower than those of its rival Walmart, despite a perceived higher level of cachet at the former. President of retail consulting firm Customer Growth Partners Craig Johnson said 35 products across both retailers in several states were included in the comparison. He commented:

“For the first time in four years, our price comparisons between the two has shown that Target has a slight edge over Wal-Mart… When you add the Redcard’s 5 percent discount, the price gap widens to 5.7 percent.”

The totals at Target came in at $269.13, under Walmart’s total of $271.07. Johnson credited Target with “[stepping] up its game during the recession” and says that the chain has caught up to Walmart in distribution, allowing it to gain ground in competitive pricing.
