A rare snow storm blanketed America’s deep south today as a cold system headed towards the East Coast, including New York.
In Georgia, Atlanta was covered in up to 4 inches (10cm) of snow, causing flight delays and making roads slippery. In neighboring Alabama, over 210 curches canceled services due to the conditions.
1-2 inches (2.5-5cm) of snow covered Memphis, Tennessee in what some locals called “the storm of the century.” Snow is considered rare in the deep south, and when it does fall it’s usually only a light dusting.
Power outages were widespread, with school closings reported for Monday in Georgia. Freezing temperatures are predicted after the snow, adding to icy conditions.
To the North East, up to 7 inches of snow was expected Sunday night and into Monday in Maryland, northern Virginia and Washington, D.C.
New York City is expecting 14 inches (35.5cm) of snow this evening, with City employees spreading salt in expectation of what could be the largest March snow fall in New York’s history. Philadelphia is expecting a similar fall.
Southern New England and Boston areas could are being warned to expect up to 15 inches (38cms) of snow. The weather service warned that flight delays and cancellations were likely throughout the region.
A winter storm warning is in effect for northern Connecticut, southern New Hampshire and most of Rhode Island from 9 p.m. Sunday to 5 p.m. Monday, and a snow emergency is currently in place for Washington D.C.
