Is there anything Rory McIlroy can’t do?
With his latest win at the PGA’s Honda Classic , Rory McIlroy is now the number one ranked golfer in the world.
On Monday night, however, the 22-year-old from Northern Ireland tried his hand at a different sport, winning a rally against Maria Sharapova during his girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki’s tennis exhibition.
Wozniacki, a former No. 1 tennis player in the world, summoned McIlroy from his courtside seat at Madison Square Garden and handed him the racquet in a lighthearted moment before the final game of her match, which she eventually lost 3-6, 4-6.
McIlroy resisted at first but then placed the tennis ball down on the blue surface, addressed it as if hitting a golf chip shot, then picked it up and started a friendly rally with the number-two ranked Sharapova.
After trading some gentle shots Rory rallied with a one-handed backhand before Sharapova returned his lob wide.
Afterwards, when asked if he was surprised by winning the point against a former Wimbledon champion, McIlroy joked:
“I’ve won a few off Caroline.”
