Qualitest Pharmaceuticals, a leading pharmaceutical company, has recalled eight types of birth control pills due to a systematic “packaging error” that could lead to incorrect dosing and unintended pregnancies.
According to a statement from the company, “select blisters (found inside the pill box) were rotated 180 degrees within the card, reversing the weekly tablet orientation,” hiding the pills’ lot number and expiration date—which could cause the women’s daily regimen to be off.
While a spokesman for the company said that there were “no immediate health issues currently” as a result of the error, he explained the primary concern is that women currently taking the oral contraceptive may unintentionally become pregnant.
“The unintended consequence of pregnancy is really the issue,” spokesman Kevin Wiggins explained. “That’s why the company took a drastic action.”
The recall, which was announced Friday, affects certain lots of Cyclafem, Emoquette, Gildess, Orsythia, Previfem and Tri-Previfem.
