United States President Barack Obama accrued $45 million fundraising in February. Not quite the $56 million he was able to raise back in February of 2008, however, it’s still quite a bit more than the $23 million he averaged in the last three months of 2011.
Obama’s campaign expects a spending blitz by outside groups leaning in the Republican direction. To clarify, super PACs are expected to raise hundreds of millions of dollars which will be utilized to defeat current President Barack Obama’s re-election bid.
In order to counter super PACs leaning towards the Republican party, Obama’s campaign announced that super PACs supporting Democrats would have their blessing.
Campaign manager Jim Messina sent an e-mail to donors last week which cited a poll in which Obama was trailing at the heels of Republican Mitt Romney. Messina then implored donors to involve themselves. He was quoted saying:
“We’re looking at a race that will be tighter than you think. And that other side has groups ready to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to tear down President Obama.”
Obama campaign contributions came in from over 350,000 people in the month of February alone. The average donation was roughly $59 throughout the duration of the election. The vast majority of the donations were micro in nature as practically 98% of the donations were $250 or less.
While Obama has not exceeded his own records set in prior years of fundraising, he has managed to raise more money than his Republican rivals. Republican National Committee spokeswoman Kirsten Kukowski was quoted saying that Obama was:
“…having a hard time convincing voters he [Obama] deserves another term…” after three long years of “record debt, high unemployment, and soaring gas prices and healthcare costs.”
What do you think of Obama’s increased fundraising efforts? Will it be enough to ensure Barack Obama a second term in office?
