President Barack Obama on Wednesday placed a phone call to GOP presumptive nominee Mitt Romney to offer his congratulations after Romney grabbed the required number of GOP delegates on Wednesday to secure the Republican nomination for the presidency.
In a statement released by the Obama camp his aides said of the phone call:
“President Obama said that he looked forward to an important and healthy debate about America’s future, and wished Governor Romney and his family well throughout the upcoming campaign.”
Romney was in California when he received the 11:30 a.m. ET call and according to sources on the ground the call was “brief and cordial” in nature.
A Mitt Romney source says of the conversation:
“Gov. Romney thanked the President for his congratulations and wished him and his family well.”
In order to secure the GOP nomination Romney was required to grab 1,144 delegates, a number he passed on Tuesday evening. Mitt Romney now has 1,171 delegates for the Republican National Convention which will be held in August.
Now that the GOP campaign finally has a more than likely secured candidate analysts believe the gloves will come off and Romney will begin throwing punches at President Obama. The Republican party is expected to spend $1 billion in an attempt to get their candidate nominated.
Immediately following the announcement of Romney’s delegate count Donald Trump once again began to fire up the “birther” movement following Romney’s release of his own birth certificate and that of his father who was born in Mexico to American parents.
