A senior adviser to President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign took a major step forward for civility today by referring to Republican challenger Mitt Romney as a clown. It was Democrats who called for civility in politics after the shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords by an Arizona lunatic in 2011. On this one they often fail to live up to their own calls.

It was during the two terms of President Bush that protestors of many of his policies referred to him as Hitler, a Nazi or a warmonger and hung him in effigy, but usually these acts were done by outside groups who were not connected to a candidate. Well it looks like the gloves are starting to come off now.

Bill Burton, a senior strategist with the pro- Obama Super PAC, Priorities USA, straight up called Romney a clown in an interview.

There have been lots of articles lately about how President Obama has been playing the “poor underfunded” card in his efforts to extract more money from donors for his Presidential bid. He has been saying he will need their money to stay competitive in the race where Mitt Romney is expected to raise hundreds of millions of dollars.

Burton told MSNBCm

“What they’re trying to do, I imagine, is engage, you know, a large number of the folks who support President Obama but have been sitting on the sidelines. They look at Mitt Romney and they say, is this clown really going to beat President Obama? And the answer is, well, maybe. If he has four or five times as much money as the president, then yes, he may well have a chance at winning in November. I think that’s what Democrats have been trying to tell other Democrats, that there’s a lot of money that’s going to be involved here and Democrats need to come off the sidelines and get engaged if they haven’t,”
