Drew Brees has received a new contract proposal from the New Orleans Saints, the proposal was announced on Thursday afternoon by general manager Mickey Loomis.
Loomis has been in deadlocked negotiations with Brees’ manager Tom Condon over a $2 million per year dispute. Brees is believed to be seeking $20.3 million per year while the saints had previously offered just over $18 million per season.
According to sources close to the negotiations Drew Brees has taken a hard stance because he realizes this could be the last contract of his NFL career with the New Orleans Saints expected to lock up the 33-year-olds services for well into the future.
One thing is for certain, the Saints won’t let their star QB simply walk away, since joining the Saints in 2006 Drew Brees has become the most prolific passer in the NFL and last season he beat Dan Marino’s single-season passing record.
Drew Brees is considered one of the hardest workers in the NFL but was forced to miss the Saints’ mandatory minicamp on Thursday because he is unsigned and has not accepted the franchise tender.
Since Drew Brees has refused to accept the teams franchise player tag he is expected to meet with the team and arbitrator Stephen Burbank in late June to determine the designation of that franchise tag. The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) is asking Burbank to determine if Drew Brees has been franchise tags for a first or second time under the language of the collective bargaining agreement.
Drew Brees currently has a franchise tag worth $16.371 million.
