Gay rights advocates in New Jersey are applauding the state Assembly who passed a bill on Thursday to legalize gay marriage with a vote of 42-33. While the bills acceptance by a majority of lawmakers is being celebrated by activists Governor Chris Christie has promised a “very swift” veto on the bill after it was voted against by every single Republican lawmaker.

The leader of the gay rights group Garden State Equality told the Associated Press:

“Today, the Legislature has brought us to the promised land,” and “We know the governor won’t let us enter, but we finally behold the view of our dreams and we will never turn back.”

In speaking out against the bill Assemblyman Jay Webber (R-Morris) said from the floor that the bill should not allow gay couples to have “their desires redefine marriage for everyone else. “‘

Webber continues:

“The bill is about redefining an important institution of civil society and that should give us all great pause.”

In supporting the bill Senate President Stephen Sweeney thanks Democrats for voting on the bill and “for taking the next step in establishing fair and equal rights in New Jersey.” In their statement Sweeney added:

“Marriage equality will happen in New Jersey. The only question that remains is whether Governor Christie will be on the right or wrong side of history.”

Do you think Chris Christie promising to swiftly veto the decision after a majority of lawmakers were in support of the bill is a direct slap in the face to LGBT members of the New Jersey community?
