Duke University coach Mike Krzyzewski became the all-time wins leader in men’s Division I college basketball after a 74-69 victory over Michigan State on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden.
With win number 903, Krzyzewski, 64, broke the record he shared with mentor Bob Knight, who coached Krzyzewski during his playing days at Army and helped shape his decorated career.
“To have this milestone in Madison Square Garden is truly special… I’ve always considered it hallowed ground,” Krzyzewski told the NY Daily after sharing an emotional embrace with Knight moments after the final buzzer. “I don’t know how it happened but it just worked out. A lot of things in my career have just worked out.”
After the game, Krzyzewski received a game ball on the court from Mark Emmert, president of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
Krzyzewski, whose career record is 903-284, has led Duke to 11 Final Fours, 12 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) regular season titles, 13 ACC Tournament championships, and four national championships in his 31 seasons as coach.
In addition to his NCAA accolades, the Hall of Fame skipper also is also the coach of the United States men’s national basketball team, whom he led to a gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2010 FIBA World Championship.
