Michael Schumacher to return to Formula 1 for Ferrari

Seven-time Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher is set to return to the sport next month, replacing injured Ferrari driver Felipe Massa.

It seems that Lance Armstrong wasn’t the only recently retired sportsman who had itchy feet. Schumacher, who at the age of 40 is three years older than Armstrong, will drive for Ferrari once again at the European Grand Prix in Valencia. Five of Schumacher’s seven titles came with Ferrari from 2000-04.

Massa will be out for the rest of the season with the fractured skull he sustained during practice for the Hungary Grand Prix last week, leaving Schumacher to pick up the pieces of a season that had already been going poorly for the famous Italian racing team.

Schumacher will undergo an intensive training program to get him up to speed for the August 23 running of the European Grand Prix. There are seven races left in the season, but Ferrari is no chance of winning the constructor’s championship for 2009 as its total of 40 points trails Brawn-Mercedes on 114 and Red Bull-Renault on 98.5.
