A 17-year-old Massachusetts boy took his reliance on AI too far. He used the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT to write fantasy stories about killing his family. Days later, he committed brutal murders of his mother and younger brother, prosecutors revealed on Wednesday.

Arjun Aravind was arrested on Wednesday morning. The teenager has been charged with two counts of murder, two counts of assault and battery on a household or family member, two counts of assault and battery, use of a vehicle without authority, and theft of a motor vehicle. The charges came following the discovery of the bodies of his mother, 45-year-old Sudha, and 14-year-old brother, Siddharth, inside their $1 million Acton home on Tuesday night.

Authorities said both victims suffered “obvious trauma.” However, the exact reason and manner of the deaths can only be determined after the Chief Medical Examiner completes the post-mortem.

According to the press release by the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office, the teen’s father had requested a welfare check of his family members at around 6:37 p.m. on Tuesday, August 11.

He raised the alarm that his family members had gone abruptly silent. He said that he had last spoken with his wife on Tuesday morning before he left for work, and in the case of Siddharth, he had last been seen around midday. Additionally, he notified the police that a tutor scheduled to arrive at the house was also unable to get anyone to answer the door.

Responding officers entered the McCormick Road area home and discovered both victims deceased inside. Siddharth was lying on the main floor of the residence. Meanwhile, Sudha was found in the home’s finished basement.

An overnight multi-agency manhunt for the missing 17-year-old suspect ended early Wednesday morning when officers spotted the family’s stolen vehicle parked outside a business just 12 miles from the crime scene.

Officers quickly matched the vehicle’s license plate to a Be On the Lookout (BOLO) alert issued hours earlier following the discovery of the bodies inside the family’s Acton home. Arjun was taken into custody without incident.

“Investigators attempted to located Arjun but were not immediately successful and notified law enforcement and members of the public to be on the lookout. Early this morning, police in Wayland, responding to an unrelated alarm call in a parking lot on Andrew Avenue, located the suspect vehicle with Arjun inside. Arjun was taken into custody by police without incident,” the official report says.

“The subsequent investigation indicates that Arjun had recently been demonstrating concerning behavior including using the internet and ChatGPT to make searches including for theoretical ideas or fantasies regarding killing his family.”

District attorney Marian Ryan expressed concern over the nature of the crimes and how they may affect the young minds.

“We know that kids will be seeing and reading about this, likely on social media, and we know that it is going to take time for the community to process this,’ she said in a statement.

‘We don’t know anything else at this point as to the timeline,’ she said. “The deaths occurred in a fairly large window.”

Arjun was reportedly scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday in Lowell Juvenile Court on motor vehicle charges and is set to face a separate arraignment on Thursday in Concord District Court on the murder and other charges.
