Rather than face a 100 game suspension, Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Manny Ramirez has retired from baseball entirely.

Ramirez recently tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug during spring training. The former White Sox and Dodgers player previously came up positive in similar a investigation in 2009 and allegedly 2003. A statement from the commissioner’s office stated that to avoid the disciplinary measures, Ramirez would instead leave the game entirely. A news release stated in part:

“Rather than continue with the process under the Program, Ramirez has informed M.L.B. that he is retiring as an active player.”

In a statement, representatives for the Rays said:

“We are obviously surprised and disappointed by this news. We will have no further comment on this matter, and our fans and organization will carry on.”

Ramirez signed with the Rays back in January, and was 1 for 17 this season in five games.
