A 68-year-old man in New York is facing theft of service charges after he refused to pay a $12 taxi fare. That’s not really news. But the fact that he had more than $5000 in his pockets and was in search of cheap cigarettes… well, it’s still not really news. But it’s funny.
The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports that Carl Kulmus hailed down a cab in New York in order to find a cheap pack of cigarettes. The cab driver, Hisham Elian, took Kulmus to two stores in search of cheap smokes, but the man refused to purchase the cigarettes saying that the prices were too high.
The driver took the man to the third store and told him that he owed $12.40 for fare. Kulmus refused to pay. Elian then decided to flag down a police officer in order to get his money.
Kulmus was reportedly “uncooperative” when the officers arrived and soon found himself in handcuffs. The man was searched and officers found more than $5000 in cash in his pockets. Kulmus did not say why he had that much money on him.
