An argument between four people turned deadly at a Walmart store in East Las Vegas last week. Now, authorities have released 911 calls that recorded the chaotic events that led to a fatal shooting outside the building near Boulder Highway and Nellis.
According to the newly released audio clip, which captures the sounds of gunfire and the aftermath of the shooting on July 21, a security guard called 911 to report a physical fight outside the store’s entrance.
“I need police to the Walmart on Nellis and Boulder. We have a big fight going on. I need you guys here now,” the security guard told emergency responders. He revealed that four people were involved in the altercation and allegedly threw rocks. About four minutes later, the caller told dispatchers, “He shot him. He f—ing shot him.”
The incident occurred at around 6 a.m. when a domestic dispute between 28-year-old Kwame Swain and his unidentified girlfriend broke out outside Walmart. Two women, identified as 30-year-old Amena Blue and 25-year-old Raqiya Smith, later became involved, believing that the couple said something to them.
The interaction soon turned physical when Blue allegedly hit Swain with a rock and Smith called her husband, Travis Ward, 35, and asked him to bring a gun. Upon arrival, Ward reportedly shot Swain in the stomach and tried to flee the store. He also allegedly refused commands from responding Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Officer Cristobal Magana to drop his gun. In response, Officer Magana ended up firing six rounds, fatally striking Ward.
The newly released 911 audio clip also captures the desperate pleas from Smith as she tried to reach Ward. “Officer, please! Can I go by my husband?” Smith screamed, adding, “He’s bleeding out! Officer, please!”
In order to get updates about her husband, Smith said while crying, “I don’t know what’s going on with my husband. He was just shot by the police at Walmart. I need to know if he’s alive.”
Swain survived the shooting and was hospitalized with injuries. The audio clip also included Swain’s mother, who asked dispatchers about her son, “My son was shot this morning in the Walmart. Is he okay?”
Smith and Blue were arrested on charges of battery with a deadly weapon, conspiracy, and disregard for public safety. Bail for both is set at $25,000 each. Swain also reportedly faces charges of domestic battery and attempted coercion due to the initial dispute.
