It isn’t always glitz and glam for reality star Kim Kardashian , as America found out in a recent episode of her hit reality show Keeping Up with the Kardashians .
A visit to her dermatologist verified the 30-year-old celebutante’s worst fears – she does indeed have psoriasis, joining more than 7.5 million Americans who also carry the chronic immune-mediated disease .
Psoriasis, which is often mistaken for rash or ringworm, is characterized by red lesions covered by silvery-white scales that are found on the knees, elbows, scalp, and lower back.
While there is uncertainty to whether she has plaque, guttate, inverse, pustular or erythrodermic, those being the five types of the disease, we do know the reality star was given a gut blow when she found out the disease is, in fact, incurable and may have been passed on to her from her mother.
“I’ve heard of it before, because my mom has always had it. She didn’t have red flaky dots all over,” Kardashian said.
Does this mean that her Proactiv-V commercial days are over? Of course not. If photoshop can make Amy Winehouse and Lady Gaga look like supermodels, removing a little psoriasis will be no problem.
But the true problem lies in the fact that her psoriasis increases her risk for a buffet of other serious health conditions associated with the disease, such as heart attack, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, depression and heart disease.
