Texas A&M University is mourning Today as Joseph Villavisencio, a senior offensive lineman for the Aggies, was killed Thursday when his car collided head-on with another vehicle.

According to report by ESPN, Villavisencio, just 22-years-old, was traveling to his home in Jacksonville when he swerved to avoid a buzzard in the road and moved directly into the path of an oncoming 18-wheeler.

“The world lost a very special person today,” former Texas A&M head football coach Mike Sherman said following news of Villavisencio’s death. “He was one of the most respectful and high character players I have ever coached. It was an honor and privilege to have known him, and to have coached him. Although his life on this earth was way too short, his impact on the people he met will be everlasting. I will never forget him.”

A statement on the Aggie’s website revealed that just hours before his death, Villavisencio participated with his Texas A&M teammates in presenting gifts that were purchased by the Aggie football team for youngsters and families at the Twin City Mission in Bryan.

“He epitomized selfless service in making Texas A&M a better football team. He was an excellent student and just a great kid,” A&M Director of Athletics Bill Byrne said in a statement. “This is a sad day for Texas A&M and our hearts are broken for his family, his teammates and his friends.”

Joseph Villavisencio, who teammates and coaches affectionately called “Joey V,” is survived by his sister, Mikeala; his mother, Christine; and his father, Jose.
