Jordyn Wieber was expected to win the all-around title at this years gymnastic world championships and she lived up to those expectations with a final tumbling pass that secured the U.S. gymnast the all-around title.
Wieber was trailing Russia’s Viktoria Komova by half a point after he made a mistake on uneven bars, a large margin to make up going into the fourth rotation however Komova performed her final rotation with a sore ankle and nearly stumbled, leading the competition up for grabs.
When asked about waiting for Komova’s score Wieber said:
“It was definitely a little nerve-wracking.”
Speaking after the competition Wieber said:
“I wasn’t sure how things were going to turn out, but they turned out amazing,” while adding, “I wasn’t expecting to see my name on the top, and when I did I was just so overwhelmed and excited.”
While Wieber walked away with the win it wasn’t without controversy after she made two visible errors on the low bar and during her floor routine when she stepped out of bounds. Wieber however put together routines with more difficulty which in turn earned her higher scores.
After her lost Komova said of her finish that she was “very upset” while adding, “It’s OK. I will prepare for the Olympic Games.”
Wieber’s win marks only the sixth time a female U.S. gymnast has won the world all-around title, other U.S. winners have included Zmeskal, Shannon Miller, Chellsie Memmel, Shawn Johnson and Bridget Sloan.
