JD Vance and Usha Vance announced in January 2026 that they are expecting a fourth child. Vance revealed how the couple agreed upon having another baby after years. Vance shared in his new book that Erika Kirk’s grief influenced Usha to finally have another baby.
Vance had asked his wife for another baby multiple times; however, she repeatedly turned down his request after having three children with him. But after Charlie Kirk was killed in Utah, Usha was present by Erika’s side to support her during the difficult time. Vance revealed, “As my wife held Charlie Kirk’s widow on the first day of her terrible sorrow, Erika [Kirk] told Usha between sobs that she regretted having only two kids with Charlie.”
What a testament to @MrsErikaKirk’s bravery and love for Charlie that instead of thinking, “How will I raise these babies?” she immediately wished she had more of Charlie’s children to cherish. 🥺💔 pic.twitter.com/8gKo03qYWA

That incident changed something in Usha and affected her decision not to have another baby. Vance added, “But something changed for Usha, and not long after we buried my friend, she became pregnant with our fourth child, a boy.” Usha is due in July. She and JD are currently raising their three children together, named Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel.
Earlier, Usha had told Vance, “Well, you can become vice president, or you can have a fourth baby,” when he had asked for another baby. Vance boasted about being persuasive since he got both. This would make them the first vice presidential family to have a child in the office. When the two revealed the news, they thanked the doctors for taking care of them.
Usha also revealed the details of her pregnancy, claiming it has been different from the previous three. This time, she is the second lady, and it comes with duties. Besides, she has to dress up more formally now instead of in sweatpants. She said in an NBC interview, “We did feel very complete with a third child, in many ways. We have our daughter, who’s amazing, and it was great. And so I just wasn’t sure. But as time passed, I realized that I was feeling more and more excited about that possibility.”
Vice President JD Vance credits the assassination of Charlie Kirk to the reason he and his wife, Second Lady Usha Vance decided to have a fourth child.

In an interview, Erika revealed that she was praying that she was expecting another baby after her husband’s assassination. This statement fueled pregnancy rumors; however, Kirk was not pregnant and remains the mom of two. She and Charlie have two kids together, a three-year-old daughter and a two-year-old son.
Kirk admitted to Megyn Kelly, “We wanted to have four. And I was praying to God that I was pregnant when he got murdered. I was like, ‘Oh goodness, that would be the ultimate blessing out of this catastrophe.'”
Now, JD Vance and Usha will have four kids, something that Erika hoped for. In the same interview, Erika advised women to prioritize having a family and not put it off. She added that women can have a career later, but can’t go back to having children.
