Jamaal Charles will not be carrying the ball for the Kansas City Chiefs again this season. Charles was placed on the injured reserve list after tearing his ACL during the first quarter against the Detroit Lions on Sunday afternoon.

Charles was running toward a first down marker when his knee gave out on him. Charles awkwardly steps for the sideline before falling over and grabbing his knee.

Here’s a video of Jamaal Charles’ injury.

Chiefs coach Todd Haley said:

“It’s unfortunate, you know, directly for Jamaal because I know Jamaal had high hopes and was excited and worked very hard to be ready to take this to the next level, and now he won’t be able to do that,”I know he’s hurting pretty good inside. That’s first and foremost where my feelings go. But as far as our team, we must step up as a team and move forward.”

The IB Times reports that the Chiefs have already seen two big players go down this season. Tight end Tony Moeaki and safety Eric Berry are both out for the year.

Running back Thomas Jones said:

“You hate to see any of your teammates, whether it’s Jamaal, Eric Berry, Tony Moeaki, any one of those guys go down, because we’re not just teammates, we’re friends. You hate to see a guy that works as hard as Jamaal go down like that.”

Jones will be picking up the majority of carries for Charles during the 2011 season for the Chiefs. Dexter McCluster, who was primarily used for trick plays in 2010, will also see his fair share of carries this year. The Chiefs also have Le’Ron McClain, who they signed in the off-season, to carry the load.

Will the Chiefs be able to be competitive at all this season? They lost both of their first two games by more than 30 points. And now with their workhorse on the sidelines, it looks the Chiefs 2011 season is just about done too.
