For the last year, State Police officers have been cruising around Vermont highways with an inmate joke painted on the side of their cars. A prison inmate who makes license plates added a clever image of a pig to police decals. Officials say that the misprinted decals were found on about 30 cruisers.
The Washington Post reports that the 16-inch car door decals are made by prisoners in Windsor. One of the inmates altered one of the spots on the cow to resemble a pig, referencing the derogatory term for a police officer.
State police spokeswoman Stephanie Dasaro said:
“It dishonors the memory of those past and present members, especially for those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.”
Officials believe that state cruisers have been driving around with the pig image for about a year. The prank decals were discovered recently when an officer was doing an inspection on his vehicle.
State police Maj. Bill Sheets said:
“While some may find humor in the decal modifications, the joke unfortunately comes at the expense of the taxpayers.”
Andy Pallito, commissioner of the Department of Corrections, said that new decals will be made on Monday for about $780 apiece. Pallito also said that he was working to find out who altered the state decals.
