A Reddit user’s rant on r/TrueOffMyChest caught the internet’s attention, criticizing the American dream and the difficulty of finding a job. The post titled “I just lost hope in the American dream” sheds light on the deteriorating living conditions in the U.S.

The user began with a brief introduction, stating that they are from Appalachia. The user’s family had lived on their land for more than eight generations.

However, when tobacco farming became difficult to sustain, the family sold portions of the property until they no longer owned the land on which their home sits. The user wrote in the post that because of a factory, the town lost its affordability.

“I was a teacher in said small town, but I got pink slipped while I was eight months pregnant before I got tenured. My fiance is a 32-year-old disabled veteran who has been fighting social security for 5 years to get benefits,” the user continued writing on the Reddit post.

They stated that their house is sold and they have a “week and a half left to move.” They also said that they are “behind on bills” and use DoorDash to make ends meet. The user finally ended the post by saying the “rug was pulled out from under my feet”, and they no longer believe in the American dream.

A user with the most likes on their comment aptly wrote: “I believe it was George Carlin who said, ‘It’s called the American Dream, because you gotta be asleep to believe it’.” It is a well-known fact that America was built by successive generations of immigrants. While the initial wave of settlers and colonists built societies on Native American land, immigrants are often credited with building the country.

After the United States adopted the sovereign status, its doors were opened to immigrants to aid in the nation’s development. However, for the first time in the country’s history, the U.S. is experiencing negative net migration across every metro area, meaning more people are leaving the country than entering it, according to a press release by The White House.

A study by the Brookings Institution found that net negative migration was between –295,000 and -10,000, with 400,000 people leaving the country. One of the major reasons for this change is Donald Trump’s aggressive immigration policy. According to The Guardian, the Trump administration’s crackdown on undocumented immigrants might do more harm to the country than good.

If current conditions continue, the U.S. will lose up to $479 billion in tax revenue over the next 10 years. The blow to the country’s treasury will be even more brutal, considering that the U.S. is bleeding money due to Donald Trump’s war with Iran, and high tariffs to promote domestic manufacturing, which, yet again, is doing more harm than good.
