Two men were found dead Saturday in the wreckage of a small plane that had gone missing while flying over the Grand Canyon.
Coconino County Sheriff’s air units located the burned aircraft – a single-engine Cirrus SR20 registered to Delaware-based Anansi Aeronautics LLC – in the Kaibab area near the North Rim of the Grand Canyon Saturday.
According to reports from the Federal Aviation Administration, the plane took off from Bryant Field Airport in Rock Hill, South Carolina and was headed to Henderson, Nevada, when it disappeared from radar around 9 pm on Friday.
While the identities of the two victims have yet to be released at this time, investigators did say that one of the men sent his wife a text message at 8:23 pm on Friday, stating that they would arrive [in Henderson] in about 90 minutes.
When that time came and went, the individual’s family then notified the authorities.
The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration will continue investigating the cause of the plane crash , which at this time is unknown.
