Floyd Mayweather Jr. will make a minimum $32 million for his fight with Miguel Cotto at the MGM Grand garden. It is the largest guarantee payday for a boxer in history, and depending on how the fight goes, Mayweather could walk away with six figures.
Yahoo reports that the Nevada Athletic Commission confirmed that Mayweather has a minimum of $32 million coming his way after Saturday’s fight. Mayweather, who will also be taking home a share of the pay-per-view profits, said in an interview that he could walk away with more than $100 million.
Forbes reports that the number will actually be around $46 million, which isn’t too bad, considering that Mayweather will only be in the ring for a maximum of 36 minutes. So yeah, $1.25 million a minute is a pretty nice salary.
The previous record for a guarantee payout belonged to Mike Tyson who was guaranteed $30 million for his fight against Evander Holyfield. Holyfield was guaranteed $11 million fight so the Tyson Vs. Holyfield is still a more expensive fight ($41 million) since Cotto was only guaranteed $8 million.
Unfortunately for Mayweather, he’ll have to spend a few months in jail before he can truly enjoy his mega payday. Mayweather was sentenced to three months in jail in December but a judge delayed his sentencing until after the Cotto fight.
Mayweather, who has a 42-0 record, is the 8-1 favorite tonight.
