On May 30, 2022, late evening, Lakrisha S. Isaac, 31, and Lushun Denise Rodgers, 41, got into a physical altercation over a barbecue in the courtyard area between buildings at the Windsor Cove Apartments in Orlando, Florida. According to eyewitnesses, Isaac punched Rodgers first, then Rodgers punched her back, hitting Isaac in the face.
The incident took a dark turn when Isaac pulled off her backpack and handed it to her 10-year-old daughter. As the two adult women kept fighting, the young girl began digging through the bag and pulled out a gun and shot Rodgers in the head. As Rodgers fell to the ground, the 10-year-old yelled, “You shouldn’t have messed with my mother!”
Rodgers succumbed to her injuries.
Police bodycam footage uploaded by Open Case shows investigators arriving at the chaotic scene. Rodgers’ family demanded paramedics reach her immediately, refusing to leave her side as she continued breathing. One person, who appeared to be close to the victim, affectionately called her “Bone,” began performing CPR. “Come on, Bone. Come on, bro… Talk, man. Come on, bro,” he could be heard saying.
When asked where the shooter went, a witness told officers, “It’s a child. It’s a baby that shot her. I don’t know where she went.” Police soon learned that the little girl was hiding in a second-floor unit directly above the courtyard.
In the footage, angry neighbors and relatives can be seen pushing past police lines, shouting and demanding help, while officers tried to secure the crime scene. Officers also tried to console Rogers’ daughter, who can be heard saying, “Oh my god. What’s wrong with my mama?” An officer clearing the crowd warned, “Watch out for the window so you don’t get shot.”
Officers split into two teams, with one clearing a path for paramedics to reach Rodgers, while the other, surrounding unit 205, weapons raised, unsure what they had to find inside with the child and her mother.
“I was in the shower, so I heard the shot. When I came out, I saw a lot of people outside, but I didn’t know what was happening. I saw the little girl with the gun in her hand. They stay right across from me,” one eyewitness narrated what unfolded. “She had it in her hand. The mama said, “You done shooting the f****** lady.” She said, “‘She was messing with you.’ So that’s all I heard. But I saw that girl with the gun in her hand.”
Paramedics eventually arrived and rushed Rogers away while she was faintly breathing. With the victim off the scene, officers turned their full attention to the standoff, repeatedly ordering the mother and daughter to open the apartment door.
The duo eventually walked out into the breezeway and surrendered without any trouble. The 10-year-old was visibly shaken and crying, while Isaac shouted profanities at neighbors.
At the police station, Isaac grew agitated and argued with investigators, demanding to see her daughter. However, the investigator kept the situation under control.
Detectives later interviewed witnesses, including Rodgers’ boyfriend, who had been outside grilling food with her for their Memorial Day celebration when the fight broke out.
According to him, an intoxicated Isaac confronted Rodgers over a social media post, and the argument quickly turned physical.
During the brawl, Isaac handed her pink bag to her young daughter, who pulled out the handgun and fired twice, striking Rogers and causing her to collapse immediately onto the pavement.
After the shots were fired, Isaac grabbed the firearm from her daughter, but instead of trying to help or calling 911, she pointed the gun at him, threatened him, and ran upstairs to hide in her apartment. “…By the time I turn around like this, her daughter had a gun in the air. I think that was a plan. I think they came to kill my baby. That’s how I think her daughter had a gun. She tried to snatch it on the door hand like she actually watched her… she shot my baby,” he recalled.
The child was taken into custody on suspicion of second-degree murder and placed into juvenile custody. Due to her young age, officials placed her under the care of the Florida Department of Children and Families to determine how to proceed.
Isaac was arrested on multiple felony charges, including manslaughter, aggravated assault, and negligent firearm storage. Her bond was set at $50,000 after her arrest. In May 2024, she pleaded no contest to manslaughter and culpable negligence. The court sentenced her to five years in state prison and three years of probation, while also ordering her to complete parenting classes and a substance abuse evaluation.
