Police arrested a Florida couple accused of starving their 5-month-old twins after the babies were brought to the hospital when one of them became unresponsive.

Doctors noticed the twins were severely malnourished and dehydrated, with their bones visibly protruding. Medical staff immediately notified the police. One of the twins reportedly weighed less than he did at birth.

The couple, identified as Madison Smith and Leroy Somersall, told investigators they had continued feeding the twins the same amount of formula they received as newborns, not realizing the babies needed more as they grew.

They told officers they believed their children were naturally thin, as Somersall himself was thin. Smith repeatedly pressed officers about her own situation rather than her children’s condition. She asked the police officer, “Can you just take me inside so I can call my boyfriend, please?”

She then asked officers to call her boss, telling them she had been through something similar in the past. “I’m so confused right now. Can you just grab my—I don’t have Wi-Fi. Can we go inside or something?” she said. 

When the Florida officers explained the charges against her, Smith defended herself, “But our children, they’re thriving. They’re healthy.” She further asked whether her fiancé was also being arrested.

Both parents were taken into custody in a correctional facility in Seminole County and charged with two counts of child neglect with great bodily harm. They were being held on a bond of $50,000 per count.

This wasn’t their first offense. Smith tested positive for THC when she gave birth to the twins, who were both a month premature, which may have contributed to their developmental issues. The family had also previously drawn attention from the Department of Children and Families, though no prior offense was confirmed.

Police said they found no formula milk in the home, raising further concerns about how long the twins had gone without adequate nutrition. After being treated at the hospital, both babies began gaining weight, but doctors warned that months of malnutrition could result in lasting neurological harm.

Bodycam footage of the arrest has drawn significant attention online, with over 23,000 views on YouTube. Many viewers expressed shock by the mother’s behavior during the encounter. One viewer commented, “I can’t sleep if an animal is hungry. I can’t imagine a baby starving.”

Another one wrote, “She has zero concern for those babies. Her main concern is whether she can get bail.” A third one added, “More concern for her damn phone than she had for her babies. People are sick.”
