England manager Fabio Capello has persuaded Liverpool’s veteran defender Jaime Carragher to come out of national team retirement and help England yet again. Ledley King is also back in the squad. None of them have played a part in England’s Word Cup qualification.
Because of injuries in England’s usual defense, Capello has been forced to invite Carragher and King to South Africa. Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand is ready to play for England though, so Carragher isn’t guarenteed any matches.
Capello has also found room for two uncapped players, Manchester City’s Adam Johnson and Tottenham’s talented defender Michael Dawson.
The English squad so far:
Goalkeepers: Joe Hart, Manchester City David James, Portsmouth Robert Green, West Ham
Defense: Leighton Baines, Everton Jamie Carragher, Liverpool Ashley Cole, Chelsea Michael Dawson, Tottenham Rio Ferdinand, Manchester United Glen Johnson, Liverpool Ledley King, Tottenham John Terry, Chelsea Matthew Upson, West Ham Stephen Warnock, Aston Villa
Midfield: Gareth Barry, Manchester City Michael Carrick, Manchester United Joe Cole, Chelsea Steven Gerrard, Liverpool Tom Huddlestone, Tottenham Adam Johnson, Manchester City Frank Lampard, Chelsea Aaron Lennon, Tottenham James Milner, Aston Villa Scott Parker, West Ham Theo Walcott, Arsenal Shaun Wright-Phillips, Manchester City
Attack: Darren Bent, Sunderland Peter Crouch, Tottenham Jermain Defoe, Tottenham Emile Heskey, Aston Villa Wayne Rooney, Manchester United
My prediction: As always when England is playing it can be a boy or a girl, but with England’s group (USA, Algeria, Slovenia) Capello will be fired if they doesn’t qualify for the 1/8 finals.
