Just days after he reportedly was semi-benched for running his mouth, Jets wide receiver Derrick Mason has been traded to the Houston Texans for a conditional seventh-round draft pick, according to CBSSport’s Mike Freeman.
The move comes after a swirl of reports that Mason – who signed a two-year, $1.3 million contract with the Jets over the off-season – was unhappy with the team’s offense.
In his five games as a Jet, the 37-year-old former All-Pro wide out managed 13 catches for 115 yards and no touchdowns — a far cry from the production that head coach Rex Ryan had been expecting heading into the season.
“Well, guys, let’s face it. I thought Derrick would catch 80 [or] 90 balls,” Ryan said in a news conference Monday. “That hasn’t happened.”
Despite the circumstances surrounding it, the trade, which comes on the heels of a three-game slide for the Jets, makes sense for Houston, which has been without star receiver Andre Johnson (right hamstring injury) for more than a week.
With his 7-yard reception on Sunday, Mason, a two-time Pro Bowler in his 15th season, became the 18th player in NFL history to reach 12,000 yards receiving.
