Israel Medine Jr. found himself in Judge Stephanie Boyd’s courtroom after causing trouble. He was picked up by the police for carrying an illegal weapon. He was sentenced to probation and community service in a previous case, both of which he had failed to fulfil. Medine cited mental health, his career, and family responsibilities for failing to stick to his community service and probation conditions, and was remanded to prison for four years.
The judge acknowledged Medine’s commitment to family, but also emphasised the importance of keeping to the conditions of his previous trial. Violating those conditions means serious prison time, and it was important that the judge enforced them.
Although completing his initial sentence would have spared Medine a permanent criminal record, he failed to fulfill its requirements.
Regarding his non-compliance, Medine said, “It started out rough for me because I wasn’t used to probation. I wasn’t used to people telling me what to do and how to do it. So, it was new to me, miss, but it’s something that I know I can get done.”
Judge Boyd granted the motion to revoke probation, sentencing Medine to four years in prison with a recommendation for placement in a therapeutic community treatment program to address his mental health needs.
However, there was one part of Medine’s explanation that simply did not sit well with viewers. Footage of the court appearance was posted to YouTube on the channel Juridocs, which racked up a little over 17, 000 views in the first 10 hours that it had been up.
Comments under the video were critical of the excuses that Medine put forward, pointing out that none of them was actually a good enough excuse to not follow a court-mandated procedure, which was in accordance with the laws of the United States of America.
One user under the video wrote, “I couldn’t give a flying f**k if he’s a talented singer or creative. They are a dime a dozen these days. He’s clearly unable to follow directions, so should be in prison.”
Another user noted, “A guy like this has been used to getting away with stuff for a long time ….. Eventually that luck runs out …..” A third user stated. ”
A third user wrote, “These young people today feel the world owes them… everything! He needs to be hit with reality, smack in the face!! Thankfully, Judge Boyd gave him what he deserves. With any luck he will learn his lesson and not re-offend!”
