The judge asked the right questions of the defendant’s sister when she suspected they were fabricating a lie in court. This courtroom drama unfolded as a greedy family used fake documents to cheat the victim.
In a 2013 case, Zebedee Shadis was responsible for destroying a family’s home and was ordered to pay back $481,000 in restitution. After a decade, he is out of jail, but he still hasn’t paid the grieving widow anything.
Shadis’s sister presented a fake rent expense of $500 in court to prevent him from paying back the widow. She explained that her brother got paid back in installments from the insurance money. Moreover, he received social security and a monthly budget that he was spending on. The judge told her that he should qualify for food benefits.
The judge was suspicious about the living arrangement, so she asked, “He pays you $500 a month in rent every month. Yes or no?” She again fired back, “Yes or no? Yes or no? There’s no thought about it. You have it written down on this paper. You’re under oath. Does he pay you $500 a month or not?”
The judge concluded that the lack of an answer proved she did not want to perjure herself in court for lying. At this point, she threatened to send her to prison for contempt of court. She ordered them to pay $500 to the widow every month and appear again in court on June 15 for the next hearing. The judge told her she would put someone else under oath that day since she caught the sister lying.
The courtroom video has over 180K views on YouTube. Several viewers called out the defendant’s behavior. One viewer noted, “She should’ve been locked up for perjury.. She was defiant and unapologetic.” One more agreed, “You rarely hear a judge scream ‘shut your mouth’ in open court, but considering the sister was caught lying on official paperwork to cheat a grieving widow. Didn’t she completely deserve it? Would you have sent her to jail for perjury right then and there?”
Another one praised the judge, “It’s so refreshing to finally watch a judge that will stand up for the victims rights instead of the criminals rights!” “Round of applause to this judge,” wrote one more.
