Mary Mahmoud, a defendant in a tenant-landlord case whom the internet believes was acting like a ‘diva’ in front of the judge, has been the object of much ridicule online after she said that she does not intend to pay “one penny” to her landlords.

Already navigating a sensitive family dispute and a separate domestic conflict with her husband, Mahmoud was ordered by the judge to pay the full amount due. At her request, the judge also provided a simplified explanation of the ruling.

 Mahmoud’s query for clarification prevented such an issue, although the judgment was not in her favor. The ruling was in favor of Barnes and Barnes, the company from which Mahmoud had leased several houses over the course of six years.

She was informed that, despite the various maintenance issues and lapses in repairs, Barnes and Barnes was entitled to the money that they were owed.

The judge made it clear that the money that was owed to them, if not paid, would allow Barnes and Barnes to file for an eviction notice, which the court would issue. This would allow law enforcement to legally remove Mahmoud and her husband, Deon Miller, from their residence.

The simplicity with which the judge explained the entire matter to Mahmoud found praise online and has been contrasted with her ‘diva’ behavior. The magistrate established a 10-day window for Mahmoud to settle all outstanding dues, after which Barnes and Barnes will be authorized to file for an eviction notice.

Under a video of the proceedings, several comments criticized Mahmoud’s behavior. The video title itself labeled her a diva, implying that her behavior was entitled. The comment section seemed to believe the same. One user wrote, “Why didn’t he hold this dope fiend in contempt?” Another one read, “I love this judge. We need more judges like him.” A third user wrote, “What a knucklehead”
