Most British royals have a secret name, including a secret bridge name used to announce their passing. The phrase “the bridge is down” serves as the signal. Royal expert Laura Windsor spoke on the matter in a conversation with the Reader’s Digest.

“Royal code names are used for security reasons,” Windsor revealed. “If anyone got hold of a phone belonging to a royal aide or security team member, they won’t find Harry Windsor and Meghan’s names in it. It is far too risky in the wrong hands. They get given code names, but they are changed regularly for obvious reasons.”

That said, the code names for the British royals aren’t as over the top as one would think. After the queen’s passing, it was revealed that Queen Elizabeth’s code name was Sharon. She’d even be referred to as “S” when making preparations for her travel.

When Queen Elizabeth died, the phrase “London Bridge is down” was used to put the plans for her funeral into motion. The royals also refer to each other with secret code names. Prince William reportedly called the Queen “Gary” for years, the nickname stemming from his childhood mispronunciation of “granny.”

King Charles’ bridge name was revealed to the public when the then-prince was feared dead after being caught in an avalanche. Charles got caught up in a skiing accident in 1988, which led to the monarchy launching “Operation Menai Bridge” to initiate funeral plans. However, Charles survived the accident.

Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, who was stripped of his royalty after facing charges in the Jeffrey Epstein case, had a controversial code name. Paul Page spoke on the matter, revealing that the former Prince Andrew’s code name was “Purple 4-1.” However, the former prince was also referred to by a derogatory code word.

“The C-nt. Plain and simple, because unfortunately, he upset everyone he came across,” Page revealed. “He was the most unpopular member of the royal family while I was there. He was just rude and arrogant, and his sense of self-entitlement was breathtaking.” That said, while most of the royalty’s names spark an interesting conversation, Prince William and Princess Catherine’s names leave more to be desired.

Catherine’s name was revealed by accident when she was visiting Wales and stated her name to a shopkeeper. The royalty was buying a swimsuit, and when asked about her details, Catherine stated her name to be “Mrs. Cambridge.”

That said, the Duke and the Duchess also have a collective code name, called “Danny Collins and Daphne Clark.” Finally, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry shared a collective code name before the infamous Megxit. The couple is being referred to as “Davina Scott and David Stevens.”
