At 22-34 the Arizona Diamondbacks are one of the worst teams in the National League and really of MLB in 2010. They are a full ten games behind the division leading San Diego Padres. They have just made a trade for 28 year old pitcher Dontrelle Willis, who pitched six scoreless innings for the team in his debut, but bigger changes seem to be looming. Ownership has made several comments over the last week that seems to imply that larger changes are needed.
This fact is not lost of D-Backs General Manger Josh Byrnes. He has made several comments talking about his team does not know how to win, and that there are holes here, there and everywhere. While he has a contract that runs through 2015, it seems that he may be a part of the problem.
Looking at their numbers none of their regular starting hitters are batting more than .300, and their starting pitching has been so bad the team had to take a chance on Willis who is unstable at best. This team looks like a team in need of a rebuild, but that is always easier said than done.
The best, and maybe only, way to rebuild a team like this one is to sell off all of the players any other team may want. They trade their players a way and get prospects in return. Then come the off season they supplement all the young talent with a few choice free agents. It is a process that is pretty risky, and usually takes a team several tries to get right. With that being said it seems the only option for this club at the moment.
