Robert Griffin III took Baylor to its first bowl victory in almost 20 years this past season and now he’s hoping to continue that success as he takes his talent to the NFL as the leagues expected No. 2 draft pick behind Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck. Speculation ended regarding Griffin’s playing decision on Wednesday when Griffin declared himself eligible for the NFL draft, ending his college career.
Griffin told a captivated press corp. on Wednesday that he would skip his senior year to enter the NFL draft.
During his time with Baylor Robert Griffin III tied or broke 54 school records in 41 games while becoming the first Heisman Trophy winner for the schools program.
Speaking about his decision Griffin said:
“Obviously you want to leave something better than you found it. I can say we’ve done that.”
Having admitted in the past that he wasn’t good at speaking to the press about big decision it took Griffin several minutes to finally say:
“It’s see you later.”
The star QB added:
“It’s just a tough decision, I love the people at this university,” Griffin said. “I love my coach for giving me the chance of being a quarterback and doing the things that we’ve done.”
Guiding his future will be agents Ben Dogra and Tom Condon of CAA.
Before his announcement Griffin met with his teammates to tell them of his decision. Griffin told coach Art Briles about his decision on Tuesday, speaking of that conversation he revealed:
“Neither of us broke down, surprisingly,” while Briles added, “Not on the outside.”
While he was obviously disappointed to see his star quarterback leave the program Briles quickly added:
“He’s ready, it’s time. I’m excited, and I’m happy for Robert, for the way he’s conducted himself for four years and the journey he has in front of him.”
The decision for Robert Griffin III to enter the NFL draft will benefit the St. Louis Rams who currently have the No. 2 draft pick which they will not likely trade for further picks in the draft which can help the team develop their lacking talent pool.
Griffin’s 10-win season tied a school record set in 1980 during Mike Singletary’s senior year.
