Ashton Eaton set a new world record in the decathlon on Saturday as he finished the event with a bit of “magic” in his home stadium.
Eaton’s 9,039 points was a 13 point improvement over the 2001 world record set by Czech Roman Sebrle. Eaton didn’t just set a new record, he did so while competing in rainy and cold conditions over a two-day period.
Speaking of his world record which happened after he finished the final 1,500 meter leg of the 10-event competition on the same University of Oregon track where he trains he said: 
“That is when the crowd really lifted me. That last 600 meters I was not running with my own legs. It was incredible.
Eaton then added:
“I don’t care what anyone says, there is magic here.”
Not only did Eaton set a new decathlon record, he did so in the presence of Olympic greats including Bruce Jenner , Rafer Johnson and Dan O’Brien. The world record also arrived as athletes in the event celebrated the 100th anniversary of the first Olympic decathlon.
Eaton also holds the record for the indoor pentathlon and had predicted that he would become the second man in history to cross the 9,000 point mark in the event.
Eaton’s win was so impressive that he defeated world champion Trey Hardee by an astounding 646 points.
The new world record holder is convinced he’ll be able to better his performance come London Olympics time, telling reporters:
“The great thing about this is, I feel like I have not maximized yet,” he said. “I am just getting going.
“I feel like I can still run faster, jump higher … and clearly I can throw farther.”
