Alexandre Vinokourov will soon no longer participate in professional cycling events after announcing his retirement following a broken leg at the Tour de France.
The Kazakh star told French television on Sunday:
“I will stop there.” While adding that he will still look for a non-compete role on the Astana team. The cyclists retirement will occur at the official end to the season.
Vinokourov broke his leg when a massive pileup of 30 riders occurred during the ninth stage of the Tour de France, forcing him to be airlifted to Paris for immediate surgery.
In 2003 the star cyclist finished third at the Tour de France then served a two-year doping suspension after testing positive twice for banned blood transfusions during a 2007 race.
