ANCHORAGE, Alaska — An estimated 4.7 magnitude earthquake jolted South central Alaska at about 12:15 p.m. local time on Tuesday, April 7/09.

According to the Alaska Earthquake Information Center, the earthquake’s center was about 16 miles north of Anchorage and approx. 9 miles northwest of Eagle River. Initial reports put the earthquake’s depth at about 16 miles. The quake was felt widely in the area both because of it’s relatively shallow depth and the fact that the center was located close to many populated areas.

No reports on whether this earthquake is related to the recent volcanic activity in the area.

More details on the earthquake can be found at the Alaska Earthquake Information Center
